Would you like to know the three habits that can mean the difference between success or failure in blogging?
It’s not difficult. In fact, it’s fun once it becomes habit. Let’s start with habit number 1.
Habit Number 1. Read daily
This is extremely important. In order to have plenty to write about, you need to continually keep taking in fresh ideas and information. The best way to do this is to read.
You need to read daily. You especially need to read about your niche. If you chose a niche that you enjoy, this won’t be so hard to do.
It improves your writing skill
Even if you read for just a half hour a day, this will make an incredible difference in the quality of your writing. Not only does reading give you new ideas, but subconsciously it effects the way you express yourself.
It’s interesting that when you enjoy a good piece of literature, you unknowingly pick up a small bit of the verbiage and add it to your own style.
So, by reading daily you benefit two ways. First, you have a constant flow of new ideas. Second, your style of writing (your writing voice) improves.
There are books available at the click of a button on any subject you may blog about. Amazon is an excellent resource. You can download some incredibly informative Kindle books that can give you a continued supply of information and fresh ideas.
Number 2. Meditate on what you read daily
Once you learn something new. Perhaps a new process. Or even a new approach to a subject. You need to make it your own. This way you can convey this fresh idea in your own way. That’s where meditation comes in.
If reading is like feeding the mind, then meditation is like mental digestion. Reading is of little value unless you digest what you learn, Meditating on what you learn makes it part of you.
Fill your mind, don’t empty it
By the word meditation, I don’t mean the kind of meditation that empties your mind. Not at all! — I mean just the opposite. I’m talking about the kind of meditation that activates your thinking ability. It’s actually a way to exercise your brain. It means you must focus and direct your thinking to analyze what you’ve learned.
This is a very active process. It’s not like daydreaming. Daydreaming is like leaning back in a rowboat and letting the current take you anywhere it is flowing. But, the kind of meditation I’m referring to means you actively take the ore and row in the direction you want to go.
One way to do this is to imagine how you can explain this new information to someone else. Think of ideas and illustrations that can help you to make the subject simple.
If you set aside 1 hour a day to read or study your niche, 1/2 of that time should be meditating on what you learned. By mentally digesting it, you make it yours to share.
Number 3. Write daily
Now, you’ll notice I didn’t say to blog daily. You may just blog once or twice a week. But you should write every day.
Especially if you want to make an income with your blog,– you need to continue growing in your ability to persuade people to by from you. In other words, you need to become skilled in copywriting.
There are some excellent courses you can take in this area of writing. But, the best way is to copy the masters.
Keep a Professional Reference File
I keep a file of some of the best copywriting letters and emails. I purposely sign up to receive emails and newsletters from companies who use excellent copywriters. I also keep articles from writers that are especially skilled at reaching their audience. I spend a half hour each day copying them word for word. I do this with a pen and paper. Not on the computer. Then I throw the copy I made away…
Now, all this may sound crazy. Why would I copy these letters and emails word for word– and then throw it away? We’ll, why does a pro basketball player practice the same shot over and over and over again? Because, that is the only way he is going to get the feel for that shot. Later,– when it really counts,– he will automatically make that shot without conscious thought because of his constant practice.
Practice, Practice, Practice
It’s the same with writing. You can copy for personal practice. There is no law against that. (As long as you throw it away afterward). But, this exercise develops your mental writing skills. The same way a pro athlete has to exercise to develop his physical skills. Reaching people with your blog will become automatic. You’ll reach the point of unconscious competence.
If you make it a habit to do those three things every day. Read, Meditate on what you read, practice writing. You will see your blog develop into an authority blog.–
Because you will be an authority blogger 🙂
