Did you know you have a superpower? All of us do. But most don’t know they have it. It’s called the power of habits. If this power is harnessed, it can make the difference between a bountiful rewarding life and a life filled meaningless mediocrity.
I can do it in my sleep
You’ve heard the phrase, “I can do it in my sleep”. Of course, this means you’ve done something so often, so many times, you could do it while your sleeping.
There is truth to that statement. People have been known to do all kinds of things in their sleep. Walking, talking, eating, even driving their car. People have done these things while they were unconscious…fast asleep.
It’s believed that this happens because of a slight malfunction during the process of sleep. There is a point during the various stages of your sleep, where your body muscles all stiffen and become paralyzed- while the mind is very active. This is a normal process.
When the body follows the subconscious
The malfunction is when the body muscles don’t stiffen and there is no paralysis. Then the body reacts and follows the direction from the subconscious mind. You will do things that will seem a bit strange, especially because you have no recollection of doing them. As an example, a person might dream they ate an entire chocolate cake. When they wake up, they find an entire box of donuts eaten.
How are you able to accomplish these things while you are actually unconscious? It’s because all these things have become habits to you. Walking, talking, eating, even driving becomes a habit or process that can be performed subconsciously.
How do you make decisions?
You may believe that you make hundreds of decisions during the day. But the truth is, you don’t make hundreds of decisions, you make thousands of decisions each day! But what is even more amazing is, most of those decisions are made subconsciously. You may have originally made the decisions at first. But they eventually became habitual reactions.
From the time you get up in the morning, the way you get out of bed, the process you follow when you brush your teeth and shower. The route you take when you drive, the many hundreds of little adjustments you make when driving to work, even what you say to people you greet them each day. Most of this is handled subconsciously.
Knowing this gives you the advantage
Understanding this can give you a tremendous advantage. If you know that most of what you accomplish during the day is because of the hundreds of habits you developed, Then, you can also understand that you are also where you are in life because of the habits you have developed.
It’s not just one or two big decisions that brought you to where you are in life today. It’s the hundreds of thousands of little decisions that you made. And you made most of them subconsciously by habit.
The advantage you have now, is that you can be successful in anything by consciously replacing bad habits with good ones. Good habits cause you to make the right decisions, even when you are not consciously aware of it.
Good habits can propel you in the right direction as if on autopilot.
