Psychographics vs Demographics

There’s no doubt that knowing the demographics of your web traffic is very important. This helps you to know who is actually visiting your site.

Demographics / Psychographics

Knowing the psychographics of your visitor is equally if not more important. The difference between demographics and Psychographics is this:

  • Demographics show you WHO is visiting your site
  • Psychographics show you WHY they’re visiting your site.

Demographic Examples:

Age, gender, occupation, ethnicity, Geo-location, and religion.

Psychographic Examples:

Personality characteristics, lifestyle, social class, attitude, principles and beliefs, activities and interests.

Advantage of knowing the Psychographics

So the advantage of psychographics is that you know exactly what you need to talk to them about. It also makes clear how to motivate them.

If you can speak to their attitude, principles and beliefs, activities and interests. Then you have their attention. Out of all the loud voices speaking on the internet, they hear yours. Because you are speaking directly to THEM>

How do you get psychographic information about your visitors

One way is to just come out and ask. You can ask them about their interests and preferences. You can do this through an opinion poll or You can ask the question in your blog.

That is of course, assuming that you have that type of relationship with your visitor. It may be that you don’t have that option. Or you may feel uncomfortable asking these questions. Or it just may not be appropriate in that particular niche.

If so, no worries– there is an alternative way. It takes a little research, but it’s well worth it.

  • Analyze the comment history on your blogs. (Analyze the responses and discussions).
  • Use Google Analytics, and analyze what blog articles and subjects are the most interesting to them.

Visit where they go

Another is to visit the same websites and forums those within your Niche visit. Notice their questions, concerns, frustrations.

When you put all this information together on one spreadsheet, you begin to see the typical person who is visiting your site. You get to know them. That knowledge is extremely useful and Powerful.

Imagine a face for your visitor

Now give that person a face. , Think of a person who has all those different demographic a psychographic details. If you know someone personally that fits this detailed description, use their face.

Now when you write, you can speak directly to their concerns. Try to think of your conversation with that person not as a sales pitch, but persuading your friend to do something he or she hadn’t thought of before. Because you know how this person actually feels about matters, their psychographic details… you are is a very powerful position to motivate them to take action.

    Very informative article, I think it’s really good. I never thought or even heard of psychographics before, but I can see how they are important for getting more traffic for your website. It’s interesting thinking about since you make it sound like you’re trying to get to know a person. You’re engaging with your audience, which I can see being a good way to develop trust, which then can lead to more visits to the website. This gives me something to think about when I’m creating content for my own niche website.

    This is a very informative post that leads you to identify your audiences and what they are looking for. Through this information, you can improve the content that we will post on our website. Analyzing our audience is like getting to know them well and building trust with them. Psychographics will be tough to do but it will be fun to motivate your audience to lead.

    Wow! This is rather a very interesting topic and one that will really help a lot to tailor our thoughts as affiliate marketers to know exactly how to deal with our demographics and know what they really want and the reasons they visit the website and what they look forward to actually achieve with it.
