Write Conversationally
The most effective way to write our blogs is to write them conversationally. Now, what do we mean by “write conversationally?”
Well, imagine yourself just sitting down at your dinner table with your family. In a situation like this, you will have conversations. When you speak conversationally with your family, you speak naturally. You don’t have to gauge your words so carefully that they sound unnatural. You just speak. You are yourself.
That is the way that you need to speak when you are writing in a blog.
Imagine Your Reader
If you can imagine yourself speaking to the reader. And just having a conversation with them.
You have to imagine your reader as a real person. As in fact, they are a real person. But, you have to imagine. In a very practical way, the precise person you are speaking to. Are they male or female? How old are they? What are they concerned about? What are they afraid of? What do they like? What do they dislike? What are their values? What are their fears?
If you can put together composite image of that person and imagine speaking directly to them, you will have a very good advantage in writing a very effective blog.
Think of Someone you know
What I like to do, is to think of someone who fits the category of the person I am writing primarily to. In this way I can write naturally.
Writing in a natural way,Means you really don’t have to worry about being correct with your grammar at all times. You can actually break the rules of writing that you may have learned when you were in school.
Forget the Rules
The reason for this, is because we don’t talk the way we write. But for your blog, you want to write the way you naturally speak.
This means you can actually emphasize words in your writing. For example, you may underline words you want to emphasize, Or put them in italics, or you can capitalize the words. You can even pours by using…
And don’t forget,You can begin a sentence with the word band,.
If you consciously do these things, you will be actually writing conversationally.
Ask the right questions – and answer them
Here’s another point, you need to imagine that the person you are speaking to is asking questions.
Have them ask questions and then you answer those questions. Of course, this means you need to ask these questions for them, and then answer them.
This will make your writing conversationally realistic because you will be entering the questions that the reader has in their mind. At the same time, your wording will be comfortable to the reader because it will sound natural, as if you were having a natural conversation.
If you write conversationally, you will see many benefits, Including an increase in the amount of readers, and in the popularity of your blog.

Thank you so much Dorcas. I agree, our words flow better when we write the way we speak.
I’m going to be honest with you. I have been struggling to find an appropriate writing style for my posts. But your explanation here has been very helpful. I know I can’t write too formal because it causes distance between me and my audience. I think the key is to put ourselves in our readers shoes. I’ll try to implement these tips. Thanks!
Your very welcome Abel.
Thank you Monty for these tips. As a non-native writer I must admit I have struggled with conversational writing but I’m glad I’m slowly getting the hang of it. You are right, conversational writing helps you connect with your readers on a personal level, which is a good thing if you want to attract their attention. Your tips will go a long way in helping those who are struggling like me.
Thank you Martin.
Hey, this is indeed an interesting and educational post on how to write for a blog. I enjoyed the video where I discovered some great tips that I can use for my writing. It is natural that we find ourselves correcting grammar errors at all times as we were taught at school. It´s more fun to picture who you are addressing and write leisurely as if you are having a conversation with that person. Thanks and have a great afternoon. Marisa
Thanks Marisa. For me, blogging is like having a normal conversation… It just takes a bit longer 🙂
I love that I came across your website about this post. Blogging is something that I recently started and I have heard that speaking to your audience naturally is key. The way you broke down the information on how to effectively write naturally really helps visualize how to best write for my readers. Especially, thinking of the questions ahead of time and being able to answer those questions for your readers is an incredible way to breakdown your content. Thank you for speaking about this and providing such valuable information to us bloggers.
Thank you Lindsey. Imagining a conversation with the reader has always helped me to try to anticipate the questions they might have. I’m glad you found the information helpful. I wish you all the best with your blogging.
Oh! This is invaluable to me had thank you so much. I have been getting reviews of my website and most of the reviewers have condemned my writing technique that it is too formal and I needed to tush things up. This is really great for me to come across in here. Personally, I will make the proper efforts to ensure that I can replicate this and push myself till I get better using these tips.
keep at it Phillip. We all learned our writing habits in school. And in business, our writing is generally expected to be formal. It’s quite a big change to start writing informally, the same way we speak. I’m constantly working on it also. If your comment reflects your writing style, your doing well. Keep up the good work!
