Can Bloggers Make Money?

Posted on July 7, 2020August 9, 2020 by Monty Murray

Do the statistics show Bloggers make money?

If you look at the statistics, you may ask that same question, “Can Bloggers make money?”.  Polls that were taken in The United States indicate that only 5-8% of bloggers can claim to be able to support their families with the income they receive from blogging.

Now, that may seem like a very dismal figure, until you put an actual number to it.  The problem with statistic is that they can be very misleading.

Just like the man who couldn’t swim almost drowned wading through a pond he new statistically was only an average of 3 feet deep.  (The statistics didn’t tell  him about the 12 foot hole in the middle of the pond).

Match the percentage to a real number

It’s the same with statistics that are intended to be negative.  When someone tries to steal your dreams by quoting a statistic like I mentioned earlier.  “Only 5-8% of bloggers in the US make enough money blogging to support their families.”  You need to ask the question “5 to 8% of what number?”

When you consider that there are over 30,000,000 blogs in the US, then you can deal with real figures. 5 – 8% of 30,000,000 would mean that 1,500,000 to 2,400,000 families in the US can claim to actually be supported by a blogger.

Now that’s really saying something, isn’t it? Now let’s go a step further,  Let’s say we apply that same percentage worldwide.  There are over 600,000,000 blogs on the internet today.  If we were to say 5 to  8% of the worldwide number, it would be an incredible 30,000,000 to 48,000,000 bloggers able to support their families with their blogging.

What about you?

Interesting isn’t it?  But regardless of what these figures say.  And regardless of what the statistics show, it really just boils down to whether normal everyday people like you and I can actually make a full time income blogging.

The answer to that question is a simple, straight forward, resounding “Yes“.  But, There are conditions.  One of them is that you will not be able to build income quickly.  It will take time.  To believe otherwise is nothing more than hype.

The beautiful thing about blogging is the way you can continually gain more and more visitors.  These visitors are called “organic traffic”. This is the best quality traffic you can get on the internet.  These are people who are actually searching for what you’re writing about.  You just can’t beat that kind of traffic,

Be careful of the “hype”

The only way to gain that sort of quality traffic is by consistently generating great content.  This may be why the percentages are the way they are.  It does require commitment and work.  AND time.

Often people are mislead by the advertisements of a relaxed person sitting on the beach with a cocktail on a little table and laptop on their knees, while raking in millions of dollars.  When people believe it’s that easy, they’re being set up for failure.

Blogging is real work

The truth is, you must be prepared for the actual work and be able to put in the time to build momentum in your blogging business.  And yes, a blog is a business.

From the moment you get your first payment deposited in your account, it is an actual business.  It needs to be treated as such to be successful.

So the next time someone asks you, “Really,.. can Bloggers make money?”  You can answer them with the simple statement “Absolutely”.

Of course this requires training.  It’s not Rocket Science, but for most of us it requires a bit of a learning curve.  The best program I’ve personally seen for this type of training is “Wealthy Affiliate”.  Take a look at my review and see if it is a good fit for you…

    Hi!

I loved your post! I have to say that you are very right of the fact that statistics may be misleading. Blooging isn’t really difficult. However, it does require a lot of commitment and many people claim it doesn’t work, just because they were not able to fully commit.

What you are saying is really accurate and I just want to thank you for all the hardwork.

You’re very welcome Juan.  There so many people quietly making money with their blogs. Unfortunately, the ones that don’t have the patience and commitment and fail at blogging — are usually the loudest. lol

      Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for putting into perspective of the number of people who are actually making money from blogging. Because like you said 5% doesn’t sound like a lot, but 1 – 2 million does.

And I think if more people tried blogging out and didn’t quit to early those numbers would be higher.

Now you say blogging takes time, but in your personal opinion how long should one expect to make a sale then how long would  you say it takes to earn a steady / good income from blogging?

I agree Michael.  I think most of the time people will blog one or two posts and then give up.  They just don’t hang in there long enough.  But in reference to your question, it would depend on the niche you choose and the methods you use for traffic.  I’ve seen people make consistent income within months.  Others have taken over a year.

Either way, the key is remaining on a consistent schedule of blogging and following up with marketing.

I really needed to read this because as a blogger myself, I try to not think about generating an income but more on the quality of content. I know it would take time to gain a constant stream of traffic and I pray that the many hours, tears and blood I put into my blogging will pay off! So I am making sure my content is top notch!

Thank you for reminding me that it takes time and confirming that wanting to create AWESOME content is KEY! Your article was great.

This is one heck of a big question that a whole lot of people like to ask me. And everyone I try to let them see that it is not what some people might hype it to be. Yes there’s some income to be made from blogging but it will only happen when one is able to put in enough work and passion to it. It seems you have put this even in a better perspective and I respect that.

Thank you Payton.  I think that believing the hype is what often causes people to fail at blogging.  The truth is, blogging is a real business.  It takes time and effort.  But the freedom of time you have later is well worth it.
